]]>It was on one of these visits that Steve was approached with a business proposition. He was asked if he would be interested in partial ownership of a busy bakery on the Central Coast. Steve’s father is a pastry cook and Steve had been around bakeries his whole life. This was a huge decision and before committing, Steve worked in the bakery on his days off to be sure he was making the right decision. The bakery specialized in gourmet meat pies and classic Australian sweets and Steve saw great potential in the business.
]]>We had an amazing time driving from Colorado to visit friends and family in Dallas, Austin, New Orleans, Arkansas, Chicago and New York City. We figured if our relationship could survive navigating (pre-GPS) across the country and back, we should be able to make it through anything!
Upon returning to Australia, Steve found work in sales and quickly started making a good living. Meanwhile, I was enjoying a gorgeous summer hiking and working in the Tetons. We missed each other and spoke often. After my summer season was up, I moved back to Keystone and started training for my new job. Steve was starting to make plans to fly back to Colorado when the company he worked for offered him a managerial role that seemed to have huge potential for growth. We were faced with another big decision. Steve’s job seemed to have more potential than either of the jobs we had lined up in Keystone, so I decided to move to Australia on a visitor visa and see how things went.
]]>Steve was excelling at work. He had been promoted twice and was managing a sales team of over 15 people in Sydney. We were having fun living across Sydney Harbor in a place called Manly (below left). We took a ferry everyday to get to work in Sydney and we lived just one block from gorgeous and iconic Manly Beach. The bulk of the shops, café’s and restaurants were all within a short (10 minute) walk of our apartment. Although a 10 minute walk is not long, it was long enough to deter hoards of visitors from walking down to our end of the beach. Even on the busiest summer day, the stretch of beach near our house was virtually empty! Not a day went by that I did not see the ocean and feel overcome with awe.
